Repair Broken Teeth and Restore Your Smile

Dental crowns, also known as dental caps, are custom-made restorations designed to cover and strengthen damaged or weakened teeth. They improve both the appearance and function of your teeth, giving you a smile that you can be proud of. Crowns are typically used for:

  • Repairing broken or cracked teeth
  • Enhancing the appearance of teeth with large fillings or decay
  • Securing a bridge as part of bridgework
  • Adding stability to a partial denture and preventing damage to natural teeth

The goal of a dental crown is to restore the strength of your tooth, allowing you to eat all of your favorite foods without worrying about causing damage.

What Are Dental Crowns Made From?

Dental crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including:

  • Metal-bonded porcelain
  • Ceramic
  • Gold

We will work with you to choose the best material based on your needs and cosmetic preferences. Non-metal options tend to provide the best aesthetic results, as they blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

What Does a Dental Crown Look Like?

Your crown will be designed to look just like your natural teeth. It will be custom-fitted to ensure that it matches the colour, shape, and size of your other teeth, making it virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your smile.

How Is a Dental Crown Fitted?

The process of fitting a dental crown involves several steps:

  • Tooth Preparation: The outer layer of the tooth will be gently reshaped to make room for the crown. This ensures that the crown will sit flush with your natural teeth. Local anaesthetic will be used to numb the area, ensuring you remain comfortable during the procedure.

  • Taking an Impression: Once the tooth is prepared, a mould will be taken of your tooth. This impression is sent to a dental laboratory, where skilled technicians will create your custom crown.

  • Temporary Crown: While your permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown will be placed over the prepared tooth to protect it and allow you to eat and drink as usual.

  • Placing the Crown: Once your crown is ready, it will be carefully fitted and bonded to your tooth using a specialist adhesive or dental cement. The crown will stay securely in place for many years, and all our crowns come with a 5-year guarantee. With proper care and dental hygiene, your crown may last even longer.

Post Crowns

In some cases, if the tooth being treated has previously undergone a root canal, a post may be needed to provide additional support for the crown. The post will be placed inside the tooth, and the crown will be securely fixed on top.

Aftercare for Your Dental Crown

Once your dental crown is in place, it’s important to continue practicing good oral hygiene to protect both your crown and the tooth beneath it. While the crown itself cannot decay, the tooth underneath can, so regular brushing and flossing are essential to keep your teeth healthy.
